PSG are set to complete the signing of reported Arsenal target Fabian Ruiz in the coming days after reaching a €25m (£20m) agreement with Napoli for the Spanish midfielder, who was previously valued at £42m.
According to CalcioMercato, the Ligue 1 champions have finally struck a deal with Napoli to sign Ruiz, with PSG chasing the midfielder for the majority of the summer amid competition from the likes of Arsenal, though the Gunners never went too far with their interest in the Serie A maestro.
As mentioned, reports suggested that Ruiz was available this summer for £42m, yet PSG have now managed to secure the midfielder’s signature for well under half this initial asking price, with Christophe Galtier and Luis Campos finally getting their man at the fee they wanted this summer.
One of the best midfielders in Serie A who has long been linked with a move to a major club, Ruiz is now set to finally secure his big European move after playing a key role in Napoli’s consistent top-four success in the Italian top-flight, much to the dismay of Arsenal.
The Gunners head into the final week of the transfer window looking to sign a wide-attacker and a central midfielder, and whilst Youri TIelemans remains Arsenal’s main target in this position, Ruiz would have been a perfect alternative despite being older than the Belgian international.
Indeed, Ruiz is a classy operator on the ball with a keen eye for a killer pass and with a good shot on him to boot, and with Arsenal going all-out for top-four this season, the Gunners could have done with a player of the Spaniard’s qualities, with PSG now set to reap the benefits.
Arsenal’s need for another midfielder was evident this weekend when Thomas Partey was missing from the Gunners’ scrappy 2-1 win against Fulham, which is why Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar missed out on a trick not pushing PSG enough to sign Ruiz.
After all, £20m is a steal for a player of his qualities, and whilst Ruiz is 26-years-old, the midfielder would have been a perfect player for Arsenal’s long-term project, yet PSG wanted the player more and got their man after months of talks with Napoli.
