Arsenal snubbed chance to sign ‘exceptional’ star player for free this week, now he has joined Ajax

Despite trying, Arsenal failed to sign a midfielder on transfer deadline day.

The summer window closed on Thursday night without the Gunners having brought in the midfielder that they desperately needed to bulk up the squad.

Arsenal tried and failed with a number of offers for Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, who wound up staying in the Midlands.

Earlier in the week, 90 Min reported that Florian Grilltsch was offered to the North Londoners.

And in light of their Luiz failure, the Emirates Stadium outfit might just regret not taking up that offer now.

That’s because Grilltsch is no longer a free agent after joining Dutch giants Ajax on deadline day.

And with the Eredivisie club in the Champions League this season, well how awful is it going to be if Mikel Arteta or Edu sees the Austria international – labelled ‘exceptional’ by Julian Nagelsmann in the past [Sky Austria] – shining on a stage as big as this every other week?

Ajax are in the same group as Liverpool, Napoli and Rangers and it wouldn’t be a good look for Arsenal’s hierarchy if the 27-year-old produces a number of impressive performances because, remember, this is the same player Edu could’ve signed for free.

Still, the Gunners had an excellent transfer window, but there are still pieces of the jigsaw missing – including a winger – and hopefully for their sake we aren’t talking how costly it was to miss a midfielder over the coming weeks and months.
