Arsenal were offered ‘devastating’ star player late on in window, but Arteta declined – report

Arsenal have enjoyed a fruitful transfer window for the most part.

The Gunners struck gold with the signings of Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko.

Marquinhos and Fabio Vieira, two exciting prospects, also arrived at the Emirates this summer.

United States goalkeeper Matt Turner rounded off the quintet of Arsenal summer signings.

However, the Gunners endured a difficult transfer deadline day, failing to land any new players.

Arsenal were trying to sign Aston Villa’s Douglas Luiz, but the Villans held firm.

According to The Athletic, the Gunners made the decision to switch attention to a midfielder on Tuesday.

Arsenal were previously eyeing a new winger, but Mohamed Elneny’s injury caused them to reassess their priorities.

While the Gunners tried – and failed – to land Luiz, there were other players they could’ve landed.

Arsenal were reportedly offered the chance to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus, but they declined.

The ‘devastating‘ midfielder ended up joining Liverpool instead.

Likewise, Youri Tielemans was effectively on standby for a move to the Emirates.

However, ‘Arsenal held some reservations about the physical and defensive aspects of his game’.

In addition, they reportedly viewed Tielemans as a No. 8 and potential Granit Xhaka replacement, not a No. 6.

‘Crucially, Arsenal felt a deal for Luiz could prove expedient,’ added The Athletic.

The Gunners will now have to see whether their depth at No. 6 holds up in the coming months.

However, Arsenal have shown that being patient and holding out for the right targets is better than panic-buying or going for players who aren’t spot-on for Arteta.

Arsenal held out for Jesus instead of signing any striker in January, and he’s been sensational. Likewise with Zinchenko.
