Cody Gakpo impressed for PSV against Arsenal last night as the Dutch side saw off Mikel Arteta’s side in the Europa League.
The result meant Arsenal now need a result against Bodo Glimt to go straight into the last 16. For PSV, it gives them a chance at usurping the Gunners on that front.
Of course, part of PSV’s success last night was how good Gakpo was. The young forward is highly-coveted in Europe, with Arsenal and Leeds among those keen on signing him.
And speaking about Gakpo last night, former Arsenal forward Robin van Persie was full of praise for the Dutchman.
“He is a good player. He always finds a way in most games to have an influence in terms of making an assist or a goal. He is not really an out-and-out striker, but he can play as a No.10, out on the wing, he can play in those positions,” Van Persie said on BT Sport.
PSV are thought to value Gakpo around the £40m mark. And with Arsenal set to spend a bit more money in January to back Mikel Arteta, Gakpo might well be someone the Gunners move for.
Our View: Cody Gakpo can be brilliant at Arsenal
In terms of players who Arsenal could sign to make a big impact in January, Gakpo certainly looks like being one.
He has been exceptional at times this season. Last night, he was a menace for Arsenal all game and there have been moments in this Europa League campaign where he has truly shone.
Gakpo seems to be one of those attacking players who makes things from nothing. And while Arsenal do have talented players like him already, they’ll question whether they can afford to miss out. The last thing the Gunners want to be doing is hesitating and then seeing Gakpo land elsewhere.
