‘I didn’t want him to leave Arsenal’: Martin Keown admits he wanted ‘special talent’ to stay

Martin Keown has claimed that he ‘didn’t want’ Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to leave Arsenal, as he added by saying that Chelsea now have a player who is ‘really important’ for them, as he told Football Focus.

Back in January, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang left Arsenal under a dark cloud after a falling out with the manager, Mikel Arteta.

The Gabon superstar ended up in the colours of the famous Barcelona and he helped the previously struggling side to the Champions League.

But, during the 2022 summer transfer window, Aubameyang’s former Dortmund manager, Thomas Tuchel, knocked on his door and brought him back to England.

Before he could get his feet warm again in London, Chelsea being Chelsea, sacked Tuchel and replaced the German coach with thriving Brighton boss, Graham Potter.

That raised questions about whether the 33-year-old’s time at Chelsea was over before it had started, but life under Potter has started well for the player, as Keown shared his thoughts on the former Arsenal man.

“At the top of the team, you have this man finishing off the goals,” said Keown. “I think that’s really important because Chelsea needed a goalscorer.

“But Pierre is a special talent. I didn’t want to see him leave Arsenal, of course, Arsenal have moved on now. They have Jesus, who is exceptional.

“There is no doubt that he got Barcelona into the Champions League last season with his goals. He will score goals, wherever he is. That’s a good player for them now.  There are a lot of youngsters at Chelsea and they need a senior player amongst them.

ARTETA MADE THE RIGHT CALL

Arsenal are sitting top of the Premier League table and the ruthless calls Arteta’s made have proven to be correct.

From Mesut Ozil, which seems a lifetime ago now, to stripping Aubameyang of the armband.

There is a reason why Arsenal haven’t been Premier League champions for so long and a reason why they haven’t even been in the Champions League.

The mindset and culture of the club has belonged in the garbage over the years, but Arteta has now turned that over its head, including making calls some don’t like and Aubameyang is one of those players.
