Katie Zelem signs new two-year Man Utd contract

Manchester United captain Katie Zelem has signed a new two-year contract that will keep her at the club until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Zelem was part of the original United squad when the first-team was reformed in 2018, having previously spent nearly a decade in the youth ranks before needing to go elsewhere for a senior career. She went on to assume the captaincy in 2019 when Alex Greenwood joined Lyon.

“I’m delighted to extend my contract here at United,” Zelem said.

“Being captain of this wonderful football club is a privilege and something that I am honoured to continue into another exciting season for this group of players. I want to thank the fans for all their support since I joined in 2018 and look forward to making more winning memories together.”

United boss Marc Skinner has been a particular fan of the midfielder during his first year in charge.

“Katie displays the values and qualities to captain this team,” he said.

“We are delighted that she will continue to lead this group of players on and off the field. Katie showed last season that she possesses the character to consistently challenge and improve herself, whilst pushing her teammates to do the same.

“We look forward to Katie leading our team into many successful seasons to come.”

Zelem is known as a set-piece expert and grabbed headlines during the 2021/22 season when she scored three goals direct from corners in successive games against Manchester City and Leicester.
