‘Like a Gnabry-type player’: Keown seriously impressed by one Arsenal player after Europa League win

Martin Keown has told BT Sport (broadcast on 8/9; 19:39) that Marquinhos looks like another Bukayo Saka after his Arsenal debut, while he also compared the youngster with Serge Gnabry.

Marquinhos was the star of the show on a surreal night for the Gunners in their Europa League opener. Mikel Arteta’s men won 2-1 against Zurich to kick off their campaign with the three points.

There were some impressive displays from the visitors. But the star of the show was surely Marquinhos. The 19-year-old made his debut for Arsenal in the game in Switzerland.

He scored the opening goal with a brilliantly-composed finish after some superb work from Fabio Vieira and Eddie Nketiah. And he provided the assist for the winner with a delicious cross towards the back post.

Keown was certainly hugely impressed with the teenager’s first outing in an Arsenal shirt. In fact, he compared Marquinhos with both Saka and Gnabry following the full-time whistle on Thursday.

“Some great performances on show, Marquinhos, he looks like a take-two of Saka, doesn’t he. Left-footed player, plays on that right wing. One assist, one goal, really, that’s a real plus for the manager because he can look upon him now and say, ‘okay, we can bring you in if we need him’,” he told BT Sport.

“He’s got a huge future ahead of him. He looked like a Gnabry-type player, short, stocky, really explosive pace. And he was very classy.”

There has been a lot of excitement surrounding Marquinhos following his move to the Emirates in the summer. Arsenal have done some incredible business when it comes to finding young gems.

And they have also built a really impressive contingent of Brazilian players in the last few years. So Marquinhos seemed to tick a lot of boxes when he came in.

Of course, tougher tests lie ahead for Arsenal and the 19-year-old. But the early signs are incredibly promising. And many will be hugely excited about what he could do in the coming years for the Gunners.
