Manchester City launch new red and black away kit for 2022/23 season

Manchester City have revealed their new PUMA away kit for the 2022/23 season, returning to the classic red and black design in a nod to one of the club’s most successful eras.

The Citizens won three trophies wearing the colours back in the late 60s and early 70s. Conceived by legendary assistant manager Malcolm Allinson, City wore a red and black striped away shirt as they won the FA Cup, League Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup all in the space of a year.

The 2022 iteration is a modern twist on that classic design, featuring diagonal black and white stripes in a tribute to the three rivers on the Man City crest, while the sponsor, PUMA logo and badge are all in a rich yellow.

City last wore the red and black stripes in another historic and hugely successful campaign: the famous 2011/12 title-winning season. There have been various nods to it at other points down the years.

The new kit was aptly launched at the NASA Space Center in Houston ahead of City’s pre-season friendly against Club America in the Texan city, where they will debut their new clobber.

While the player issue shirt features ULTRAWEAVE performance fabric and dryCELL anti-sweat technology, the replica version is made with 100% recycled polyester as also boasts dryCell technology.

Former City player and club ambassador Mike Summerbee – who starred for the club in that successful era – said: “It’s fantastic that the Club and PUMA have been able to work together to reinvent a classic and iconic shirt design from an important era of the Club’s history. I hope it brings a sense of nostalgia and pride to our fans around the world, in the same way it has for me.

“I’ll be looking forward to seeing the shirt in action during our pre-season fixture against Club America and hope our fans in the US and those watching around the world are too.”

Marco Mueller, PUMA senior head of product line management teamsport apparel, added: “Manchester City are one of the most exciting teams in the world, they always put on a show. For the away jersey we wanted to bring back a popular design synonymous with some of the most successful City teams of the past, and infuse it with new energy.”
