‘OOOH, NOT CLEVER’: GARY NEVILLE SLAMS £15M ARSENAL PLAYER V MAN UNITED LOSS

Gary Neville has criticised Arsenal midfielder Sambi Lokonga for a rash challenge during a defeat at Manchester United this evening.

The Gunners suffered a 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford on what was a disappointing evening for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Arsenal thought they had gone ahead through Gabriel Martinelli in the first half, but it was – perhaps harshly – chalked off by Paul Tierney for a foul on Christian Eriksen moments earlier.

However, Neville feels that the North Londoners themselves were lucky later in the opening 45 minutes when Tierney missed a rake from Lokonga on Bruno Fernandes, with the incident causing the Portuguese midfielder some pain.

And the Sky Sports commentator has described the incident as ‘not clever’.

He said on Sky Sports: “Oooh. I don’t think it’s a good one. He just scrapes down his calf. Those can be leg breakers. He’s lucky the referee’s not seen it. It’s not clever.”

You have to add balance and say that Lokonga – a £15 million signing last summer – is nowhere near Arteta’s best XI.

The Belgian midfielder was covering Mohamed Elneny, who himself was already playing in the absence of Thomas Partey.

It was a difficult and ultimately ineffective performance from the former Anderlecht dynamo, illustrating why it was important for Arsenal to sign a midfielder on the final day of the summer window.

However, all of their efforts to lure Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa failed and time will tell just how costly it is for Arteta and co.
