Players will discover whether they’ve made the England World Cup squad next week and Arsenal‘s Ben White has been tipped to miss out.
White, a £50 million signing by the Gunners in 2021 [Sky Sports], has been a magnificent part of Mikel Arteta’s side this season.
Arsenal are top of the Premier League and the former Brighton & Hove Albion player has been as solid as anybody in that back four.
That being said, White has been playing in an unfamiliar right-back role so that William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes can partner one another in central defence.
And Merson has told Sportskeeda that because he’s effectively a right-back these days, and with England having a number of people in this position, the 25-year-old will miss out.
He said: “I don’t think Ben White will make it to the World Cup squad, because he’s been playing at right-back. Tomiyasu was outstanding against Salah. Arteta changed it around last week, and Tomiyasu marked him out of the game.”
WHEN IS ENGLAND WORLD CUP SQUAD ANNOUNCED?
According to Sky Sports, the deadline for Gareth Southgate to name his final World Cup squad is October 19 – or next Wednesday.
Despite Merson’s pessimism, it’s possible that White does get a look-in.
Even as a right-back, his performances this season have been stellar as anything and the Three Lions manager might just be attracted to the sort of versatility that White – who can also play midfield – can offer.
The Sky Sports pundit isn’t convinced, but White could make the England World Cup squad.
