‘Phenomenal’: Arteta blown away by £6m player who’s proven him wrong at Arsenal

Mikel Arteta has admitted that he’s been blown away by the improvement that Gabriel Martinelli has shown at Arsenal.

The Gunners boss frustrated supporters for much of his first year in charge in North London for a refusal to use Martinelli all that often.

Arteta’s predecessor, Unai Emery, had been utilising the young Brazilian – a £6 million signing in 2019 – on a regular basis, leading to Arsenal fans identifying him as an electric force in the side.

However, the 21-year-old has been a mainstay in the North Londoners’ XI since the start of last season.

And Arteta has conceded that the ‘phenomenal’ South American has improved no end in an effort to prove to the manager how ‘wrong’ he was to not unleash him.

He told Goal.com: “When he wasn’t playing, he was all the time in my office and every time showing me on the pitch how wrong I was.

“And the moment that we agreed that he was ready to do it, the way he has improved, the way he is helping the team and still the room for improvement he has is phenomenal.”

Indeed, this genuinely is a ‘phenomenal’ talent and it’ll be fascinating to see how he improves.

Remember, this is a kid who’s still only 21.

Arsenal fans haven’t seen anywhere near the best of him yet and, with three Premier League goals already this season, it’s looking like this could be his best season at the Emirates Stadium in terms of output by a distance.

In five games, Martinelli has already managed to score half what he managed during 29 appearances throughout the entire 2021-22 campaign.

As Arteta said, his improvement is frightening and with Arsenal visiting Manchester United this evening, they need him to get better again.
