‘Rode their luck’: Paul Merson predicts where Arsenal will be in PL table when World Cup begins next month

Arsenal are currently on top of the Premier League table after 10 games, and Paul Merson has predicted they will go into the 2022 FIFA World Cup as the league leaders.

Mikel Arteta seems to have completely transformed Arsenal. The Gunners have lost just one game in all competitions so far and have picked up impressive wins against sides like Liverpool and Tottenham.

The North Londoners are four points clear at the top now, and Merson thinks they’ll stay there for a while.

Paul Merson predicts where Arsenal will be in PL table when World Cup begins next month

The 2022 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Qatar in just over a month’s time and there are five Premier League game-weeks scheduled to take place between now and then.

Arsenal were set to face Manchester City this week in what would’ve been an incredible clash, but that game has been postponed. That means the Gunners will only play four times in the Premier League between now and the start of the World Cup next month.

Arteta’s men face Southampton, Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Wolves, and Merson believes they are all winnable games. He has predicted that the Gunners will remain the Premier League leaders going into the World Cup.

He wrote in his column on Sportskeeda: “Arsenal rode their luck (vs Leeds), and they got a result in the end. That’s what you’ve got to do in the Premier League – it’s not always plain sailing.

“It’s great that Arsenal are not playing Manchester City this week – they’ve got winnable matches coming up and should be at the top of the Premier League table when the World Cup comes up.”

Our View:

Arsenal should be really happy with how well they’ve done so far this season.

At the start of the campaign, nobody predicted they would be at the top of the Premier League table after 10 games. They’ve surprised everybody and Arteta deserves a lot of credit.

The Gunners are currently four points clear of Manchester City at the top of the table. That’s a nice little cushion to have, and Merson’s right, that should be enough to see them go into the world cup as the league leaders.

Whether they can stay there until the end of the season, however, is the big question.
