You have to wonder whether Arsenal regret not pushing harder for Mykhaylo Mudryk during the summer transfer window.
The Gunners reportedly had sights on the Shakhtar Donetsk star. But according to The Express, Edu baulked at his £50million valuation.
In addition, Mudryk himself seems eager to join Arsenal. So convincing the player to join probably wouldn’t have been a problem.
In the summer, Mmudryk10 – the player’s official account – ‘liked’ a post linking Arsenal with him.
And though Mudryk stayed put at Shakhtar, he kept speculation alive just days after the transfer window shut.
He told CBS Sports: “Yes, I think every guy dreams about playing in the Premier League.
“Arsenal is a very good team, very good coach. I like the way they play.
“Yes, from my side, I can’t say no, but a transfer is not only my decision.”
Now, Arsenal may find themselves paying even more for Mudryk.
The 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength this season, dazzling fans, neutrals and opponents alike.
And on Tuesday night, Mudryk scored an absolutely superb goal against Celtic in the Champions League.
In the 58th minute, with the Hoops 1-0 up, Mudryk equalised for his side in style.
He picked up the ball just inside the Celtic half, ran at the defence at pace, and let rip with a fierce effort outside the box.
‘Sensational’
“Absolutely stunning from Mudryk, arguably the best player on the park this evening so far,” BBC Sport journalist Kheredine Idessane said.
“Pace, power and a fabulous finish arrowing into the top of Joe Hart’s net. Sensational goal, and we’re back level at Celtic Park.”
Transfer journalists Fabrizio Romano and Ben Jacobs both commented on Mudryk in wake of his heroics.
“It’s pretty clear now why Shakhtar Donetsk have turned down €30m (£26m) bid in August for their talented winger Mykhaylo Mudryk,” Romano wrote on CaughtOffside.
“He’s a really top talent who’s worth more than €45-50m (£39-43m), according to Shakhtar.”
Jacobs, meanwhile, claimed that the likes of Arsenal would have to pay even more – upwards of £52m, apparently.
