Manchester United reportedly could be prepared to walk away from a deal to sign Antony, and focus on Cody Gakpo instead.
That’s according to Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth who claims that United could now move for Gakpo as talks for Antony continue to prove difficult.
The Red Devils are also thought to be monitoring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s situation as well!
It really is all systems go on the transfer front at Old Trafford at the moment. Ten Hag has already signed Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Casemiro.
Antony is clearly United’s number one transfer target (Daily Mail). Ten Hag is certainly not putting all of his eggs in one basket though…
Manchester United ready to move for Gakpo if Antony bid fails
Sky Sports News reporter Dharmesh Sheth claims that United will not be held to ransom by Ajax:
As good of a signing as Antony would undoubtedly be for United, we believe that there must come a time when Ten Hag just moves on and signs someone else. Ajax are really digging their heels in and that’s their prerogative.
Cody Gakpo would be a fine alternative option to Antony in our view. The 23-year-old is allegedly really keen to move to Old Trafford this summer.
Foot Mercato have claimed that United are confident of being able to secure his signature for around €40-50 million (£33.9-42.4m).
Gakpo has been described as a ‘sensational’ player by the well-renowned Twitter account Dutch Football. He has also been labelled as ‘superb’ by football journalist Josh Bunting.
He bagged a brilliant 21 goals and 14 assists in 47 games in all competitions for PSV last season. In the main, Gakpo is a right-footed left winger.
However, the seven-capped Holland international can play anywhere along the front line, and has pace and technical ability in abundance. He plays with a real sense of directness that United have desperately lacked recently.
The PSV star stands at 6ft 2in tall, so he should be more than capable of coping with the physicality of Premier League football.
We think that Cody Gakpo would be a very smart signing indeed for Manchester United this summer, and would be a more than adequate alternative to Antony. Ten Hag just needs to get this one done as a matter of urgency, in order to seamlessly integrate him into the team as soon as possible.
