Sky Sports reporter: Arsenal now “pushing” to complete significant deadline day deal

Arsenal are ‘pushing to sign’ Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz ahead of tonight’s 11 pm deadline, according to Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge.

The Gunners are in the market for engine room reinforcements after Mohamed Elneny picked up a long-term hamstring injury in the recent 2-1 victory over Fulham.

What is the latest news involving Luiz?

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Luiz is eager to join Arsenal and that ‘official talks are ongoing’ between the relevant parties as they look to strike a deal in the final hours of the window.

It’s claimed that a £20 million fee could be put forward by the Gunners, and it remains to be seen if that figure will be enough to tempt Villa into sanctioning the Brazil international’s sale.

Romano states that personal terms are not anticipated to be a problem between Luiz and Arsenal, while Villa have already lined up his replacement.

The Midlands outfit are expected to bring in Leander Dendoncker from Wolverhampton Wanderers after he entered the final year of his contract at Molineux.

And Arsenal will surely be hoping to profit from a similar situation considering Luiz’s existing deal is also due to expire in the summer of 2023.

What has Bridge said about Luiz?

Bridge believes that Arsenal are ‘hoping’ to sign ‘at least one more’ player before the window slams shut until January, although reckons their bid for Luiz will ‘be rejected’.

In an interview with GiveMeSport, he said: “Arsenal are hoping to get in at least one more before the deadline.

“Douglas Luiz is the player they’re pushing to sign, £20 million expected to be rejected by Aston Villa, but Arsenal could be coming in again later if it is rejected with the news that Elneny could be injured for a bit of time.”

Who else have Arsenal signed this summer?

It’s been a fairly productive summer for manager Mikel Arteta, who has been able to stamp his authority on the first-team squad in north London.

Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko have been brought in from reigning Premier League champions Manchester City while attacking midfielder Fabio Vieira was acquired from FC Porto.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Matt Turner has joined from New England to provide cover and competition for Aaron Ramsdale while teenager winger Marquinhos has been snapped up from Sao Paulo.

If Arsenal can add Luiz to their ranks, then Arteta will have a fairly balanced squad, boasting strength in depth across virtually the entirety of the pitch.
