‘Today’: Romano says ‘fantastic’ star player Arteta released last year is now joining Arsenal’s London rivals

Exactly a year ago today, Arsenal terminated Willian‘s contract and now, the Brazilian is one step away from joining Fulham on a free transfer.

The Gunners signed the veteran from Chelsea two years ago, and it was one of their worst signings ever. The experienced winger just didn’t perform, and Arsenal decided to show him the door after just one season. He could now come back to haunt Mikel Arteta’s side.

Fabrizio Romano says Willian is joining Fulham, a year after Arsenal released him

After Arsenal released Willian, he returned to Brazil to join Corinthians on a free transfer. He played 45 times there since his move last year but managed to score just one goal in all competitions.

Just like his time at Arsenal, his spell at his boyhood club was a disaster, and he terminated his contract there as well.

Now, Willian, branded as a ‘fantastic’ player, is set to return to the Premier League, and Fabrizio Romano has revealed that newly-promoted Fulham are on the verge of signing him with a medical scheduled for later today.

Romano tweeted: “Medical scheduled today for Willian in order to become new Fulham player on free transfer after contract terminated with Corinthians.

“Willian wanted to go back to the Premier League and it’s now really close.”

Our View:

We don’t know if Willian will have a successful campaign at Fulham, but if history is anything to go by, he will likely score against Arsenal when the two sides face each other next.

The Gunners have let a lot of players leave over the years – irrespective of whether they wanted to or not. Plenty of them have come back to hurt the club, and Arsenal fans are still pained by some.

Robin van Persie, Emmanuel Adebayor, Olivier Giroud, Cesc Fabregas and even Theo Walcott are just a few who have scored against Arsenal after leaving them, and it won’t surprise us at all if Willian does the same.

Thankfully for the Gunners, the London derby at Craven Cottage is a long way away, and they won’t have to worry about that till then.
